This semester, we explored healthcare design through a project focused on reimagining the emergency department at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. The goal was to improve patient experience, staff efficiency, and overall functionality within a high-stress, fast-paced environment. Our design approach emphasized patient-centered care, addressing challenges such as overcrowding, privacy, and wayfinding. We integrated evidence-based design principles to enhance safety, reduce stress, and support healing—particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations. Through this project, we gained valuable insight into how thoughtful spatial planning and human-centered design can transform emergency care environments and contribute meaningfully to public health outcomes.
